A ripe Papaya
Ripe papaya is a rich source of antioxidant nutrients such as carotenes, vitamin C, flavonoids, B vitamins, folate and pantothenic acid. It is rich in the minerals, potassium, copper, and magnesium. Ripe papaya promotes the health of the cardiovascular system and also provides protection against colon cancer. In addition, papaya contains the digestive enzyme, papain, which is used like bromelain, a similar enzyme found in pineapple, to treat sports injuries, other causes of trauma, and allergies.

Mexican healers have used Papaya in their native medicines for centuries.

Ripe papaya has a very soft orange flesh and tastes sweet.
Doses: eat a small slice of papaya every day.

Green papaya and papaya seeds are said to have contraceptive properties. The black papaya seeds taste a bit like a mild black pepper. People in India and Southeast Asia have traditionally used the papaya seeds and the green fruit as a form of birth control. The flesh of green, unripe papaya has a milky sap and a bitter taste. It can be used to avoid pregnancy. Green papaya is slightly toxic. Pregnant woman should avoid unripe papaya as it can induce miscarriage during pregnancy (it probably needs to be applied directly to the uterus but I am not sure). There is unfortunately not much information available about the doses of green papaya and the exact application to be an effective birth control method.

Note that there is a big difference between unripe green papaya and ripe papaya and the two should not be confused with regards to their medical properties. It's important to know about this difference because papaya is often harvested while not yet fully ripe in order to ripe during transport. It may arrive in a slightly unripe condition in your supermarket. A ripe papaya has has a soft flesh and you can feel how soft it is when you touch it.
