Allan's Hill lost, a sad day, letter to the editor by Jutta Benfey, News & Views Oct. 1971

Dear Editor:

Although Saturday, Sept. 18 was a beautiful sunny day with sailboats on the shimmering lake and the Venturers, Scouts and Cubs enjoying one of our parks - their leaders giving their time and good spirits FOR FREE - it nevertheless will remain a dark day in my memory. Why? Because enough of our homeowners - according to the Montreal Star the most affluent on the island - did not see fit to invest a small yearly sum of money to keep Allan's Hill as a source or recreation and enjoyment during our long winter months. Enough of our homeowners accepted Mr. Allan's generosity many years FOR FREE but turned their backs when they were asked to match one man's altruism with a token of gratitude as a community. Enough of our homeowners would have liked to keep Allan's Hill as a recreational area but did not make the effort to vote accordingly. Enough of our homeowners were not able to forsake a small amount of personal diversion in order to allow the children of their fellow citizens the splendid opportunity for excellent ski instruction within easy reach. To avoid misunderstanding let me add that no personal interest is involved in the last sentence above since our own sons have already had these opportunities, graduated successfully from Allan's Hill and will always be grateful for their chance. But enough of our homeowners could not sacrifice some time or risk an investment for the present and future children of our area.

Just think about it. For me, at least, it was a sad day indeed.

Jutta Benfey
