One possibility to find new ideas (according to Edward de Bono) is to take a random word and try to build a connection between that word and the solution to your challenge. Do this a few times with different words. Trying to make a connection forces you to think more widely and by increasing your horizon you hopefully will be able to solve whatever problem you have or at least find a new approach how to tackle it.
